Civics Chit
Civics 101: CIVICS – The study and science of the rights, duties, privileges and obligations of citizens. An Americanism from 1880-85. It's no coincidence it was during the late 1800's that the US working class was awakened, united and empowered to breakup the Trusts and earn a living wage.
Seldom if ever have the powerful bowed down gracefully to civil protests. Remember the union strikes and women's right to vote – sadly people had to suffer and die before they were heard.
Perhaps the reality is that power demands civility but seldom offers it themselves, for all that would take is simply to LISTEN.
So that means we’ve just gotta get up off our butts to organize, unite and advocate to make them listen. Democracy is not a spectator sport.
“Civics was a class that used to be required before you could graduate from high school. You were taught what was in the U.S. Constitution. And after all the student rebellions in the Sixties, civics was banished from the student curriculum and was replaced by something called social studies. Here we live in a country that has a fabulous constitution and all these guarantees, a contract between the citizens and the government – nobody knows what’s in it It's one of the best kept secrets. And so, if you don’t know what your rights are, how can you stand up for them? And if you don’t know what’s in the document, how can you care if someone is shredding it?” – Frank Zappa
